Discussing the character of Charles Darke Essay
Charles Darke is a character of huge importance in the novel because he embodies so many of the novels themes and is key to Stephenââ¬â¢s recovery after his loss of Kate and future journey. Events involving Charles Darke are not only significant to the plot but also teach the reader a lot about the movement of time and the confusion and issues surrounding childhood. The readers introduction to Darke shows him as a successful man in his publishing firm who has managed to acquire respect and power (ââ¬Å"New York and Frankfurt were on the lineâ⬠) however as the introduction continues the reader begins to see that under the surface he has a more childish side to him as he relishes receiving attention: ââ¬Å"making expansive remarks to a young writer was one of the more desirable perquisites to his professionâ⬠. Even before his breakdown his youthful nature is evident for example choosing his political career is described as a ââ¬Å"parlour gameâ⬠. Darke is one of the characters that McEwan uses to present the major theme of childhood and adulthood, there is a constant conflict present within Darke of being a child and of being an adult. His successful political career shows that he must have debating skill and great intellect however at the same time his juvenile personality also breaks through. Having acted as a parental figure after the loss of Kate it is tragic that he should regress so rapidly away from reality. It is not only Darkeââ¬â¢s contrasting personality which warns the reader of what may occur later, he is obviously unsettled as shown by his rapid career moves and house move from Eaton Square to the countryside. Thelma also describes to Stephen how he lost his mother and had a cold upbringing with his father suggesting that Darke did not experience childhood at all. Charles Darke also jumped straight into being a successful and married businessman therefore missing out on important lessons that many adults learn through their mistakes. Just before the reader is introduced to Darke there is even a subtle echo of what will happen later as Stephen describes a picture: ââ¬Å"a grim-faced crow with a stethoscope round its neck taking the pulse of a pale young boy who appeared to have fallen out of a treeâ⬠. Darke shows the reader a disquieting reaction to time because instead of moving forwards he moves backwards, the reader sees personal and sometimes eerie moments involving Darke, these help McEwan to show the reader what a precious state childhood is and how time cannot be manipulated. Darke also embodies the theme of politics. Not only does he move the political plot forward by getting Stephen onto the committee but he is also the reason that Stephen meets the Prime Minister. The novel was written during the Thatcherite era of the 80ââ¬â¢s and this is clearly reflected in the tone of the book and McEwanââ¬â¢s opposition to this right-wing rule. Stephen Lewis is cynical about the Conservative views that Darke has decided to take on and the short, abrupt syntax that McEwan uses emphasizes his suspicions of the government in power. It is a cruel irony that, like the Beggar Girl, Charlesââ¬â¢ eventual death is a result of his political career and the harsh culture surrounding him. Different opinions can be taken on what Darkeââ¬â¢s specific role is within the novel. He clearly is important for McEwan to carve in the political aspect of the novel and McEwanââ¬â¢s own political views however his regression back into childhood carries a much more complicated message. The title of the book ââ¬Å"The Child in Timeâ⬠at first may seem to describe simply Stephenââ¬â¢s loss of Kate however one can go much deeper and find that perhaps what McEwan is trying to show the reader is Stephen and Darkeââ¬â¢s search for their own child in time. While Stephen searches constantly for the physical Kate he also looks for her in time through memories and visions of her growing up. Darkeââ¬â¢s search for the child in time is different, he has had no childhood of his own so he searches for it and eventually finds it by regressing into boyhood. On the surface McEwan presents this as a natural step but it is actually quite disturbing and this is shown by the smile on his face at death. The conflicts within Darke show the reader the bitter sweet nature of childhood, while Darke is happy and carefree he also believes himself invincible and this eventually causes his death. Charles Darke is also important for the readerââ¬â¢s understanding of Stephen Lewis. It is because of Darke that Stephen meets Thelma who is important as she looks after both of the characters and gives the reader another way to look at time. The reason that Thelma chooses Stephen as the one person who she allows to see Charles after his breakdown is because she knows that he will not judge or condemn and it is important for the reader to know this feature of his character. Stephen has experienced loss and thought endlessly about childhood and is therefore understanding about Darkeââ¬â¢s regression. The reader also learns about Stephen through the contrast of the characters. Darke becomes part of the right wing government while Stephen is saddened by the two ââ¬Å"tribesâ⬠in the Supermarket. Stephen sees Charles Darkeââ¬â¢s death first hand and this may help him reach an understanding about his loss of Kate because he has to come face to face with the reality that she too maybe dead. The fact that Darke dies with a smile on his face may remind Stephen that if Kate is dead then she has at least died in a happy part of her life and has not yet lost her innocence. Darkeââ¬â¢s relationship with Thelma can also be contrasted with Stephenââ¬â¢s relationship with Julie. As the novel progresses Thelma becomes more and more of a mother figure to Darke and her older age implies that it has never been a marriage of passion and deep love but one of a mutual understanding, acceptance and care. In contrast to Darkeââ¬â¢s seemingly sexless marriage Julie and Stephen have a much more real and natural relationship where there high points and low points are kept private and by the end their genuine love for one another is clear. Darke offers McEwan the means to show the reader his themes of time, childhood and politics but he also has deeper significance. Darke shows the reader how childhood, or the lack of it, effects ones whole life and how reaching adulthood is a continuous process that may never end. The search for ââ¬Å"The Child in Timeâ⬠by Darke is an emotional and metaphorical journey that eventually liberates him from the stresses and pressures of his hectic work life even if it does ultimately cause his death.

Mukherjee vs Rodriguez
Mukherjee vs. Rodriguez As of today, The United States accepts more legal immigrants as permanent residents than any other country in the world. The number of immigrants totaled 37. 5 million as of 2006. All of this has to do with Richard Rodriguez and Bharati Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s stories based on immigration in the United States. Entitled ââ¬Å"Los Otros, Mis Hermanosâ⬠and â⬠Two Ways to Belong in Americaâ⬠. Where as Rodriguezââ¬â¢s story is about a young Mexican immigrant finding it hard to live in a society where he struggles to understand itââ¬â¢s main language. He believes as a child that he doesnââ¬â¢t belong in a country where itââ¬â¢s main language is not of his. He only feels at peace when he is with his family speaking his own language. As well as where Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s story is of two sisters named Mira and Bharati, both immigrants and very successful in their careers. Explaining how Mira all of a sudden has rage towards the country she has lived in for thirty years, due to the lack of effort shown by the U. S. Congress to enact a legislation that would not allow any government benefits towards resident aliens. As for Bharati, she has mixed feelings on the subject at hand. Rodriguez and Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s stories share a common theme and purpose, but are diverse in their conflict and focus. Los Otros, Mis Hermanosâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Two Ways to Belong in Americaâ⬠share a common theme in where they both are legal immigrants living in America. Rodriguezââ¬â¢s story is based on his childhood where he is living as a Mexican immigrant. Since Spanish is the only language he is able to interpret, he reference ââ¬Å"The language of thei r Mexican past sounded in counterpoint to the English of public societyâ⬠(Rodriguez pg. 309). For ââ¬Å"Two Ways to Belong in Americaâ⬠the two sisters are living in the United States while Bharati is an American citizen, Mira is not. However both have Indian roots within them. For both of them their cultural backgrounds are very strong within them. As of course, them being an immigrant in a new country that they are not familiar with, they both have very strong bounds with their cultural heritage. Where as for example in Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s story she shows how traditional her family is with their Indian marriages by saying how they are properly done in her home country. Mukherjee states â⬠We would endure out two years in America, secure our degrees, then return to India to marry the grooms of our fatherââ¬â¢s choosingâ⬠(Mukherjee pg. 316). However, they both did not follow those guidelines by marrying grooms of their own choosing. In Rodriguezââ¬â¢s story he shows how speaking Spanish made him feel at home, by whenever he spoke to his family members or friends in Spanish he felt as if he was recognized as someone special. While there are similar qualities between the two stories there are contrarieties too. One being their formalities of education, reading where Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s story was coming, from the sisters were well educated and successful in their careers. They both received degrees in their prestige subjects. As for Rodriguezââ¬â¢s story when he was younger it seemed as if it was very difficult for his upbringing into education. For example, his parents learning of the English language, as he states ââ¬Å"In public, my father and mother spoke a hesitant, accented, not always grammatical Englishâ⬠(Rodriguez pg. 309). It seemed as if the schooling where he was coming from was not as much of a impact as compared to mukherjeeââ¬â¢s learningââ¬â¢s. In ââ¬Å"Los Otros, Mis Hermanosâ⬠as a young boy Rodriguez was very secluded from the rest of civilization by reason of his inability of learning the English language. In ââ¬Å"Two Ways to Belong in Americaâ⬠the sisters were very much in content with the rest of the world. They would travel all throughout the world willing to try anything new. Where as Rodriguez, he was concealed from his very own neighborhood, he didnââ¬â¢t know the names of his neighbors, as he states, ââ¬Å"But no one in the family knew the names of the old couple who lived next door; until I was seven years old, I did not know the names of the kids who lived across the streetâ⬠(Rodriguez pg. 309). The stories by Rodriguez and Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s stories had a similar case and dedication, however were disparate in their upbringings and socialization. Being in a country where your not accustomed to is difficult enough, living their must be an even bigger challenge. In Rodriguezââ¬â¢s case he couldnââ¬â¢t speak Spanish outside of his home so he felt at lost. In Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s situation even after living for 30 years in this country they were still at subject to be dismissed from it. This shows you being the outsider in a world isnââ¬â¢t as easy to sustain, even when they had thought they had finally made it.

Through this project, I seek not only to find the reasons behind this unfortunate circumstance; I also attempt to find the reasons and to try to solve the problem by applying the theories of management and organizational behavior towards this end. I hope I have impressed upon at least some employees the value of honest and true service and the need to cut down absenteeism to the very minimum. 5. What do you think that American Airlines needs to do in order to motivate you and other employees to work more honestly and as a team to improve service levels, efficiency and effectiveness at American Airlines? (Thank you for your support and assistance. I assure you that this information will be kept strictly confidential, and will not be shared with anyone except my class teacher and fellow students for the purpose of my assignment). In addition to talking to people, making observations can be a good source of primary research on a problem. Since I was looking at the causes of absenteeism and wanted to correct the situation, I chose to relax in front of the American Airlines Customer Service Counter one afternoon and observe service attitudes in action. 3.
